I have a couple of dedicated surround decoders I may put into service instead, if I can't get the AV amp repaired soon (haven't had time to get into it yet), but in the meantime, I'm okay with two-channel sound. That might sound good! However, my AV surround amp let out some magic smoke recently, so that project is on hold. I want to try my Infinity Modulus speakers as centers, for example. I've been playing lately with the idea of a center speaker again, but something really nice. NO ONE ever seemed to notice or tell the difference with good L/R speakers and a good phantom center, the voices seemed to come from the center where the characters were, anyway! At first, I tried some other center speakers, but in the end, I decided a phantom center sounded best, so I just left the center speakers in place for looks, and ran the sound through the outer mains. I dumped those center speakers pretty fast. All the sounds that emanate from the center have at least part of their sound located there, and that often includes critical sound effects. In those days, "Do you want to come see my Laserdisc Home Theater?" was a really effective pick-up line, sort of like "Would you like to take a spin in my Ferrari?" as 90+% of girls never had seen one, figured only rich people had them, and were curious to experience it!Īnyway, I listened to the salesman's advice, and bought small center speakers (Yes, I bought a pair of them, as no one yet sold purpose-built 5.1 sets with a single center speaker.) He told me I didn't need larger, hi-fi speakers there, as "the center is all just voices, anyway." Well, I quickly found out how WRONG he was on many recordings, there is a lot of information in the center channel, besides voices. I bought my first HT set-up twenty years ago.

A bigger C might make the voices a bit fuller (something I used to prove when demo'ing the C1 vs the bigger C2 when I used to sell them) but even the C1 is a monster compared to the crap most people end up these days.ĭISCLAIMER: most of my info comes from selling HT when Pro Logic was a new invention and I have not really kept up too much, but I am betting the basics are still similar.

My trusty old Def Tech C1 has a couple of 6.5" drivers and it does a good job working with some big PSB800 as mains and two 12" subs. However, past a certain point proper bass management and good subs can do the job vs going to a huge C speaker, especially as the majority of the low bass is not on the C track. Except that it really does sound bad compared to a bigger center. Tell them a good story about the sub handling the bass and everybody is happy. So why do we see such tiny centers in those HT in a box set up? Very simply a matter of giving people what they want, something small and unobtrusive. It is the most important in that the majority of the information on most soundtracks comes out of the center.
